So I was getting my hair cut at 4:00 on Thursday when the power went out. No big deal we all though…. Afterall, it looked like an accident down the street, probably hit the pole and knocked out power. I got home, no power there either. Sarah was home and had heard a bit more – 50 million of us without power.
At approximately 5:00 Sarah’s mom was suppose to be landing at Detroit metro….
She made it, a bit delayed (we think her plane was the last in). Sarah made it down there to get her (surprisingly the highways were mosty empty she said). Long story short, she took mom to grandmas, sat, played cards, came home.
I took Friday and today off from work. The plan was to pack up the van Friday morning and head to Nelson Ledges (near Youngstown, OH) for a weekend of racing.
Then our phone died. No one elses around us mind you. (We are much peeved at SBC for a couple of things. The end result, we may drop our land line all together and just get a two phone cell deal.) Our cell couldn’t get a signal (older phone, lots of people making calls).
Now, the reports we all heard were that Michigan, Ohio, Ontario, New York were all without power. That is what I believed, not being able to verify anything else. I did get ahold of my mom in Grand Rapids – they had power. (I called here right around 5:00, she hadn’t heard about the blackout yet. She called me back a couple of times before we lost our phone to update me with news).
So, no power, no gas. Van was at half a tank. Race car needed gas. Heck, according to the reports, Ohio didn’t have power. Looked like the race was cancelled.
Until I got ahold of the registrar.
Me, “Hello, is the race still on?”
Registrar (somewhat bemused by my question), “Of course, why wouldn’t it be?”
Me, “Um, the whole no power thing?”
Her, “We’ve got power. It never went off here.”
Oh. Interesting. Now what? I still didn’t have gas, didn’t know were power was and wasn’t. Then the power returned. We were racing.
Off to the gas station with the van. They had us restricted to a $20 limit, which topped off the van but I couldn’t get fuel for the race car. Oh well, we can pick that up on the way.
By about 5:00 we were out the door and on the road.
