A few weeks ago we finally went to the local bike shop (Rochester Bike Shop (RBS)) and picked up a couple of new Trek mountain bikes. We rode a variety of bikes at both RBS and REI and the Treks came out on top.
As for the old bikes — they were off to the Salvation Army. With a little TLC my 20 year-old Fuji would make a fine ride.
I got myself a Trek last year, although it was more of a hybrid model – thinner tires than your bike and higher handlebars:
