Our house is now a safe haven for kids — we just attended a Michigan Community Child Watch session.
Sarah and I want to be active community members and, with a kid on the way, this seemed like a good way to start. In a nutshell, we have a sign in our window that lets kids know that they can knock on our door if they feel threated, are lost, or just need some help. That’s pretty much it, outside of just noticing if anything look suspicious. (Not that we’re going to be spying on and reporting every little thing we don’t like.)
I was the only one in the session who remembers the blue signs from when I was a kid, probably because Child Watch was started in my hometown in 1979. It began after a little girl was abducted, assaulted and murdered. She would be the same age as me today.
Check with your local police and see if there is a similar program in your neighborhood. It’s an easy way to be involved.
