And Your Phone Number?

Remember when you could go to the store and just buy something? No filling out forms; no reciting name, address and phone number? I do. And in some stores you still don’t need all that. So why do some (Radio Shack and Best Buy leap to mind) insist on collecting such information? Oh, I know why they want it, but they don’t need it to take my money.

Well, I’ve finally grown tired of fighting it. The poor high school cashiers aren’t to blame. Unfortunately, they have to deal with my refusals and aren’t trained in how to handle it (like just typing in a default number). So, instead of trying to convince them they don’t need my phone number and finally giving in and creating one on the spot, I’ve got a number to give them all:

(xxx) 867-5309

I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before. I encourage everyone to use it. If they ask for a name, just tell them you’re Jenny or Tommy. Let’s fill their data banks with the same happy number.

Join me, won’t you?
