Long Weekend

This weekend actually seemed longer than it was; and I’m not tired out or anything.

Sarah’s test went better than she expected – of course she won’t know the results until November! Oh the wait.

To celebrate we went out for dinner and a movie. Dinner: Texas Roadhouse; t-bone steak just OK. Movie: The Hulk; just OK.

I have to differ with Jack and Kristen on The Hulk. I’ll try not to give anything away for those who haven’t seen it (and are actually reading this), but it was slow. Beautifully filmed, neat comic-book inspired transitions (sometimes), and really slow. Even the big desert fight scence was amazing slow for an action sequence. The upside, the CGI was better than I expected. I think cutting the first 40 minutes would greatly improve the pacing of the movie. But even then there would need to be changes to the pacing of some of the other sequences.

So, unlike Kristen, this does not make my “must see” list. Caveat: It really does look good on the big screen, so if you’re going to see it, hit a matinee or bargin theatre.

As for the rest of the weekend, Saturday afternoon/evening was the end-of-year staff party for Sarah’s school. This year is was up in Richmond. One of the teacher’s lives on 20 acres in the middle of almost-nowhere. It was nice walking around the property and sitting around the campfire. Too bad more people didn’t show up.

Sunday we did a little work around the house – I finally organized my racing boxes – and then headed to Adriane’s (Sarah’s cousin) graduation party. Then watched Most Extreme Elimination Challenge. Even Sarah started laughing at it this time around. It’s just that ridiculous.

That’s it for now.

Work is all but deserted today. It’s great because I’m actually getting things done. Not that I’m getting very far in my pile of stuff that needs doing – a shortage of work I have not. At least nothing is being added to the pile today.

Sarah shoud be nearly done with her test about now. She is taking the essay test portion for her National Board Certification. She’s a little nervous, but I know she will do just fine.

Meanwhile, she also a bit nervous because the union president is picking a fight with the school board. At this point it looks like there are going to enter the school year without a contract. One of the things the school board wants to do is change our health care from Blue Cross to an HMO. I don’t think so. HMOs suck. I see it almost daily here at work with people fighting to get basic things taken care of; like my coworker Tony who ripped up his ACL. The HMO just wanted him to go to physical therapy. Nice.

OK, back to getting that work done.

Good news and more good news

We start with a few days ago: Sarah received an official letter that she can go to John and Kristen’s wedding! The letter is a little pissy, but nonetheless they approved her time off.

On to yesterday: We received an application from HUD. Apprarently, because we paid off our FHA loan (when we refinanced to a ‘regular’ mortgage) we are due a refund of nearly $900! Don’t know why. Don’t know what it’s from. Don’t care.

Sunny Days

That was a great weekend. Perfect weather and nothing “important” to do (i.e. no family, etc. commitments).

Saturday Sarah ran in the Race for the Cure (her 3rd year) and I spent the entire day cleaining out the garage. Now, it wasn’t so messy that it took all day, I just wasn’t in a hurry. Mostly there has been a lot of accumulation of stuff as I preped the race car. Not to mention all of the debris that collects over the fall and winter. So everything came out, floor got swept and vacuumed, air compressor got drained and cleaned, etc. etc.

Now we can actually open the service door and walk around with out stepping over mounds of stuff. All that’s left is to re-organize my racing boxes. (Sarah bought me a new storage unit to take to the track, so I need to repack all of the spare parts I take.) I might re-organize the shelving back there as well.

On Sunday I stayed outside more. Got the downspout on the rear of the house rerouted so it drains off to the side instead of adding the roof’s water to the backyard. Hopefully this will help with the water accumulation (as in, less of).

Then it was time to sand down one of my pairs of jackstands and repaint them. Why? Because I could.

The day ended with a short New Bloods Old Wounds game. We didn’t do much, but that’s OK, I enjoyed being there. Actually it was a rare session were I was actually doing nothing more than talking with two or three other players. Go figure.

T’ai Chi Argg

I’ve been having one of those weeks with t’ai chi. It’s like climbing that flight of stairs and as you get half way up your foot slips and you scamper/slip/sort-of-fall back down 4-5 steps nearly dropping the cake you’re carrying.

It’s really two things. One, just when we think we have an idea of what we are doing, our teacher shows us that were really doing it wrong. This isn’t a bad thing, it’s actually very good. She has a knack for knowing when we can handle the next bit of information, the next level of understanding, and drops it on us.

Two, my stinking right leg (hip actually) seems to have revolted again. It is my “bad” hip; not that there is anything wrong with it (i.e. no injuries or anything), it just doesn’t allow me to sink and turn onto it like my left. I’ve only had this problem for, oh, three years now. The frustrating bit is I thought I had it opening up a little bit; felt it working a bit better. Then this week, whammo, it feels like I’m trying to move a leg on an action figure – stiff, doesn’t move quite right, and isn’t even mine. I hate when I can’t seem to control my own body.

Oh, speaking of not controling my body, my arms also feel like big slabs of meat. So, in addition to working on my hip, I really need to get my arms integrated with the rest of my body. I know that it’s possible – I’ve felt it in the past. Now if I could just do it.

Argg.

We’re back and we had fun.

Racing went really well, and Nelsons wasn’t so bad. They have actually cleaned it up a little bit and repaved a couple of sections of the track.

As for me, I finished in 4th on both days (out of 7). I’m happy considering the top three cars on Saturday were 3 seconds a lap faster than me. Sunday I was catching 3rd place.

The really nice part was that every session I went faster as I figured out the track. And it is a fast track – 4th gear in all but two spots. I managed to lap consistently in the 1:24 range during Sunday’s race, and managed to hit a couple of 1:23s. (Around a 2 mile, 13 turn course. That works out to some 85 mph average; top speed of about 113 mph.)

The backstretch and turn 12 ended up being really fun. There is a 70 degree bend in the backstretch that you take nearly flat-out. Getting your car into a gentle 4-wheel drift at 110 mph is rather exciting.

My personal achievements for the weekend that I’m most proud of (having never been to this track before to race): I went faster every session; I never went off-track.

OK, now I’ve got to figure out when I can go racing again.

It’s official: I’m racing this weekend at Nelson Ledges. While Nelson is not our first choice for a track, it will do. For those unfamiliar, Nelson is, well, interesting. As in “may you live in interesting times” interesting. The layout of the track is nice, but it needed to be repaved about 10 yrs ago. The swamp has mostly dried up, so that’s a good thing (as in less mosquitos). But we need to make sure we take a lawn mower to cut down our paddock space.

Things that need doing:

  • change oil
  • pack spares
  • get fuel

Shhh!

Despite the really annoying graphics bug in the ‘new’ game I picked up, I had a pretty good weekend.

Saturday night Sarah and I meet Terry and Rosemary in Ann Arbor to see Pandora’s Box — a 1928 silent film accompanied by a live orchestra. It was an interesting, and odd, little film.

Also at the movie was Lisa Marie and Andy. The six of us had a very nice time chating and eating Stucci’s post-movie. Unfortunately for the girls, Andy and Terry geeked out over electricity.

Yesterday mom and dad stopped in for a visit, and brought grandma with them. Grandma is 96 (98?) years old now – it was good to see her, and she likes to get out and enjoys the car ride.

Well, isn’t this interesting:
['cause we all know these are true]

Snake Daemon
Your SNAKE DAEMON shows that you are dangerous,
clever, and disconcert others with your
effortless power. You function best when left
to yourself, as other people’s minds work too
slowly for your liking.
